SHAH ALAM, April 22 — Selangor’s 34 water treatment plants (WTPs) have a combined production capacity of 6,500 million litres per day (MLD), more than sufficient to meet the state’s average daily demand of about 5,370 MLD.

State executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato' Izham Hashim said the current capacity also allows Selangor to maintain a water reserve margin of 17.4 per cent, equivalent to 1,130 MLD.

“Based on the National Water Services Commission’s guidelines, a reserve margin exceeding 15 per cent is categorised as high, meaning the state’s water supply is in a comfortable position,” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly sitting today.

He was responding to Rawang state assemblyman Chua Wei Kiat’s query on the current water reserve margin in Selangor and future projections.

Izham added that Pengurusan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd expects the reserve margin to increase to around 20 per cent within the next five years to meet growing demand.

"To strengthen long-term water security, the state government is implementing several infrastructure projects, including the construction of new treatment plants that will add 2,360 MLD to the existing supply capacity.

"These include the Sungai Rasau WTP Phase 1, which will produce 700 MLD and is scheduled for completion in early 2027, followed by the Sungai Rasau WTP Phase 2 with the same capacity, expected to be completed in 2031,” said Izham.

Other projects are Labohan Dagang WTP Phase 2, which will add 200 MLD by 2029, and Langat 2 WTP Phase 2, expected to contribute 760 MLD by 2030.

He added that the state government is also focusing on reducing non-revenue water through a long-term programme involving pipe replacement, upgrading pump houses and storage tanks, improving distribution pipelines, and enhancing the connectivity between water supply systems.

"The state government is also studying the feasibility of introducing desalination plants to diversify water sources, as falling technology costs have made the option increasingly viable,” said Izham.

Similarly, Selangor is implementing the Selangor Off-River Storage Scheme, which utilises more than 185 lakes and ponds to store water during drought periods and serve as flood-mitigation infrastructure.
