SHAH ALAM, April 14 — Around 200,000 civil servants will start working from home (WFH) tomorrow, said Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
He added that WFH approvals are up to department heads’ discretion after considering service needs and operational continuity.
“Not everyone (can WFH). We will consider factors. WFH approvals depend on department heads,” he said when met by reporters after he launched the Public Sector Administration Reform Policy at the Public Sector Innovation Drive 2026, held at the MBSA Convention Centre here today.
On April 1, Public Service Department (JPA) director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz said in a notice that public sector officers in Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Selangor, and state capitals living more than 8km from their workplaces are allowed to WFH.
The thrice-a-week WFH move for civil servants except those in the safety and defence, health, and education sectors, introduced in response to rising costs due to the West Asia conflict, takes effect tomorrow.
Throughout the WFH policy’s active period, civil servants must work only from the home address they have listed in the Human Resources Management Information System (HRMIS).
The Selangor government has mandated WFH for its civil servants from Tuesdays to Thursdays, starting tomorrow, to save costs amid the global energy crisis.
Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said the policy will be reviewed monthly for effectiveness and fresh needs, and encouraged the private sector to activate WFH as well.
