PUTRAJAYA, April 14 — The government has announced a 30 per cent discount on Electric Train Service (ETS) tickets across all sectors, as well as the Ekspres Rakyat Timuran (ERT) service on the JB Sentral-Tumpat-JB Sentral route, to help Malaysians cope with rising living costs driven by higher fuel prices linked to the West Asia crisis.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook said the initiative is in collaboration with Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd (KTMB) to encourage greater use of rail as a more economical and efficient mode of transport.
He said the discount applies Mondays through Thursdays, aimed at boosting public transport use with safer, more efficient, and more comfortable rail services.
However, the discount will not be available during school breaks and public holidays, to ensure better capacity management during peak demand periods.
“To enjoy this offer, passengers must purchase tickets using a promotional code to be announced by KTMB between April 15 and 30, for travel from April 15 to October 14,” he told a press conference here today.
Loke added that the discount excludes ETS Business Class tickets, ERT First Class and Sleeper Class tickets, as well as concession fare holders.
In addition to KTMB, he said the initiative also involves Express Rail Link (ERL) service, which will introduce two new monthly travel passes offering discounts of up to 90 per cent.
These targeted passes include the MyPutrajaya Monthly Travel Card for civil servants working or residing in Putrajaya, and the MyKLIA Monthly Travel Card for Malaysians employed at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) Terminals 1 and 2.
“Both programmes offer unlimited travel during the promotional period, with users enjoying discounts of up to 90 per cent compared with standard fares, depending on the sector,” Loke added.
