Selangor to manage West Asia crisis impact with special task force

SHAH ALAM, April 1 — The state government will set up a special task force to better prepare Selangor in the face of global uncertainties due to the West Asia conflict, said Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said this is the start of a comprehensive state-level action framework to support Putrajaya’s efforts in managing the impact of the global crisis.

He added that the conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran presents great implications to the economy, and requires meticulous early preparations.

“I called a special roundtable of the State Executive Council this morning to discuss the (West Asia) crisis and its implications to the Selangor economy and people.

“This special sitting gathered economists and geopolitics experts to share their analyses and projections on the effects from the current conflict.

“As the main contributor of 26.2 per cent to the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP), any implications to Selangor would surely directly impact Malaysia’s overall economy,” Amirudin said in a Facebook post today.

Amirudin said the COVID-19 pandemic, massive December 2021 floods, and the Putra Heights gas pipeline explosion came with important lessons for the state to boost preparedness based on accurate data.

“Also present (at the roundtable) were heads of several state government subsidiaries directly involved in the ongoing crisis.

“With each challenge, the state government and Selangor people will work together to rise and recover,” he added.

Amirudin asserted that the state government will ensure each measure is comprehensive and based on facts and the latest information in order to help Selangor’s people and industries.

He thanked the panellists who shared their views and expertise during the roundtable, including Datuk Zunika Mohamed, Tan Sri Muhammad Ibrahim, Nungsari Ahmad Radhi, Prof Phar Kim Beng, Akbar Md Thayoob and Prof Tan Sri Noor Azlan Ghazali.

He also said he would meet Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim along with other state leaders tomorrow to look over federal plans to manage the crisis.

“A special meeting for the state government will be held on Friday to coordinate the best measures to comprehensively help the people, especially vulnerable groups, and ensure effective support for the industrial sector.

“The establishment of a special task force and periodic meetings will ensure each formulated step will be implemented in an orderly, responsive and effective manner to face global economic challenges,” Amirudin said.
