SHAH ALAM, Mar 27 — Restaurants and business premises in Klang have been issued compounds by the Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) for failing to comply with regulations on the use of Bahasa Malaysia on signboards.
MBDK Corporate Communications Department director Norfiza Mahfiz said all business signboards are required to prioritise the national language in line with existing by-laws.
“All business signboards must be in Bahasa Malaysia in accordance with the Advertisement By-Laws under Local Government Act 1976 and Advertisement By-Laws (MBDK), 2007,” she said, The Star reported.
She added that while the use of other languages is permitted, Bahasa Malaysia must remain the main language displayed.
“Although other languages are allowed, words in the national language must be given priority and their font sizes must be larger than words in other languages,” she said.
The enforcement action was carried out through a joint operation between MBDK and Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka over two days.
