SHAH ALAM, March 17 — The government has announced a two-day 50 per cent toll discount in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidilfitri, beginning at 12am, to help reduce the cost of travelling back to hometowns.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the initiative covers Class One vehicles on all highways, except at the Bangunan Sultan Iskandar and the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link's Tanjung Kupang toll plazas.
"The discount will take effect beginning 12.01am on March 18 (Wednesday) until 11.59pm on March 19 (Thursday).
"This initiative involves a financial commitment of RM21.03 million to compensate toll concession companies," he said in a statement today.
Anwar added that this is part of several efforts by the Federal government to safeguard the people’s welfare, particularly during Ramadan and ahead of Aidilfitri, amid global economic uncertainties.
The government, via the Insolvency Department, will also implement a fast-track bankruptcy discharge initiative, benefiting about 4,000 individuals, particularly single mothers and fathers, who will be released from bankruptcy.
"All these measures reflect the values of compassion and humanity that form the core of the Madani government, in ensuring that the people continue to benefit from the prosperity we are building together,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Prime Minister urged the public to spend prudently during the Aidilfitri celebrations and manage their finances with discipline in preparation for future challenges.
Previously, the government announced several initiatives to help Malaysians prepare for Aidilfitri, including an additional public holiday and the early payment of Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah Phase Two to 5.2 million recipients on Tuesday (March 10).
Putrajaya also unveiled special financial assistance for civil servants, retirees, and veterans, as well as an expansion of the FLYsiswa flight ticket subsidy, worth RM400, for students at various higher education institutions.
Additionally, the government implemented the Festive Season Maximum Price Scheme from Sunday (March 14) to next Saturday (March 28) and organised nearly 1,900 Jualan Rahmah Madani programmes throughout Ramadan to ensure adequate supply and fair prices.
The sale of subsidised packet cooking oil to foreigners has also been banned to ensure the subsidies benefit only Malaysians.
