SHAH ALAM, March 14 — The Selangor government has conducted various emergency simulation exercises to enhance preparedness of agencies and authorities in facing unexpected disasters.

State executive councillor for disaster management Mohd Najwan Halimi said the exercises involve the cooperation of multiple agencies to ensure residents' safety in times of emergency.

"This is also based on our experience with the Putra Heights incident last year, where we faced an unexpected disaster. We never expected a gas pipeline explosion in the area.

"That is why we are conducting simulation exercises. We want to ensure if there is a recurrence of such an incident, all quarters are prepared to respond. We want to be ready from all aspects, not just safety alone."

He said this after attending the Jom Shopping Aidilfitri voucher handover ceremony for the Kota Anggerik state constituency here today.

According to Najwan, the exercises are done in various high-risk locations, including ports, airports, industrial areas and petrol stations.

He said this is critical to improve existing rescue processes and ensure every agency understands its respective role during emergencies.

“Previously, we conducted a simulation involving the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA) at Port Klang, where the scenario involved pirates abducting victims,” he said.

Last Tuesday, Petaling district officer Huzunul Khaidil Mohamed said the Petaling District Disaster Management Committee had conducted a series of simulation exercises to enhance preparedness for any emergency.

Among the exercises conducted were scenarios involving a toxic gas attack at Subang Airport, a fire at a petrol station in Section 27, large-scale evacuation drills in SS19 Subang Jaya, and a simulation of a VIP delegation kidnapping from abroad.
