SHAH ALAM, Sept 11 — Strengthening Selangor’s sporting talent requires a collective effort rather than being the sole responsibility of the Selangor State Sports Council (MSNS), said state executive councillor for youth, sports and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

He said all local authorities should identify sports with potential in their respective areas and play a role in providing the necessary facilities and infrastructure to support their development.

“Each local council should adopt one sport as its focus. For example, Sepang has adopted silat as its sport.

“Selangor-born talents should not only carry the state’s name, but they can also represent their respective districts,” he said at a press conference on the achievements of 2026 Malaysia Para Games (Para SUKMA) athletes at the Selangor Youth and Culture Complex here today.

Najwan said the “one council, one sport” approach would help each district develop its own sporting strengths and identity while creating more opportunities for young people to nurture their talents.

He added that the perception that sports do not generate immediate financial returns should also change, as investment in sports development would contribute to the long-term potential of the younger generation.

“We want them to become well-rounded individuals. Sports activities and academics need to be balanced,” he said.

Najwan said sustained support from all quarters, including the royal institution, local councils, parents and the community, was essential to ensure sports development in Selangor could be carried out comprehensively.

He said a collective approach would not only help produce more promising young athletes but also nurture a generation that is active, disciplined and equipped with skills across various fields.
