SHAH ALAM, March 11 — The Selangor Fire and Rescue Department is stepping up efforts to raise public awareness through its ‘Siap Siaga Raya’ fire safety campaign to ensure safety remains at an optimal level throughout the festive season.

Selangor Fire and Rescue Department director Dato’ Wan Md Razali Wan Ismail reminded the public not to overlook safety measures when leaving their homes or travelling back to their hometowns.

He said the campaign focuses on fire prevention, particularly at a time when many city residents leave their homes ahead of the Aidilfitri celebrations.

“Make sure all unused electrical switches are turned off before leaving the house to prevent fires caused by short circuits,” he said when launching new fire engines at AEON Mall Shah Alam yesterday.

He also encouraged motorists to keep at least one portable fire extinguisher in their vehicles as a precaution during emergencies.

According to him, this is important as there have been cases of vehicle fires resulting from road accidents.

At the same time, the public was reminded to avoid open burning, which could cause fires to spread to surrounding areas.

The programme also featured various community activities including a children’s colouring contest, certificate presentations and inspections of fire safety systems at premises within the shopping mall.

The event also saw a symbolic send-off of new fire engines, representing the department’s preparedness to safeguard the public throughout the festive season.
