MPKS steps in after dumping leaves food court area filthy

SHAH ALAM, March 10 — The Kuala Selangor Municipal Council (MPKS) has detected several individuals misusing rubbish bins designated for traders near the Jalan Stadium food court in Kuala Selangor, causing the area to become dirty and poorly managed.

The council’s Corporate Unit said the bins were specifically provided for traders at the food court for the purpose of managing waste from their premises.

It said the location of the bins had also been reasonably selected and suited to operational needs and waste management in the area.

“To ensure cleanliness is maintained at all times, rubbish collection at the location is carried out by KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM) seven times a week.

“In addition, the council has instructed KDEBWM to carry out cleaning works within a five-metre radius of the bin area to prevent pile-ups and environmental pollution,” it said, as reported by Harian Metro.

Earlier, the newspaper reported that irresponsible parties had been using the bins in the area as a dumping site, causing discomfort among members of the public.

The situation worsens when the surrounding area becomes dirty with various types of rubbish scattered around after being rummaged through by stray dogs.

The problem is understood to have persisted for two to three years and becomes more noticeable ahead of Ramadan when food waste and wet rubbish are also dumped at the location.

The council’s Corporate Unit said it had also installed signboards reading “Please dispose of rubbish inside the bin” as a reminder to traders to dispose of waste properly and not leave it outside the bins.

As such, the council will intensify monitoring and enforcement from time to time to ensure the facilities are not misused.

“For residential areas, solid waste collection is carried out using the front-of-house method three times a week according to a set schedule.

“The council remains committed to ensuring public cleanliness and comfort are maintained at the best level and appreciates every complaint and feedback from the community to improve its services,” it said.
