SHAH ALAM, March 10 — The Selangor Community Tourist Guide Programme (HKSS) has opened its second intake, with Tourism Selangor inviting individuals interested in sharing local history and culture in Hulu Langat and Gombak to join the programme and guide visitors in exploring the uniqueness of these areas.
Its chief executive officer Chua Yee Ling said the second intake of community tourist guides for the districts of Hulu Langat and Gombak is open to the public from March 1 until March 23.
“Each district will recruit 25 tourist guides, and training is expected to begin in May,” she told Media Selangor.
The first training session for community tourist guides focused on improving storytelling skills, as well as integrating and coordinating cultural mapping.
“The second intake will focus on the districts of Hulu Langat and Gombak because this year is not only the year of Visit Malaysia Year 2026, but also the reassessment year for the Gombak-Hulu Langat (GHL) Geopark after it was recognised as a National Geopark in 2022,” Chua said.

Focus on geopark tourism
She added that the state government is actively working to have the GHL Geopark recognised as a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Global Geopark. Therefore, training for the second group of tourist guides will also include courses on geopark knowledge and information to prepare for strengthening geopark tourism in the future.
“Geopark tourism has great potential because it can attract international tourists who are interested in geology and ecology. Therefore, we hope those who are interested will seize this opportunity to join the training and work together with the state government in the effort to obtain UNESCO Global Geopark recognition,” she said.
Chua also urged residents living around the GHL Geopark area and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) interested in developing geopark tourism to come forward and register.
According to previous media reports, during the programme’s first phase, the areas of Kuala Selangor and Sabak Bernam were selected. 49 community tourist guides completed the three-month training in November last year and received their certificates from state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim.
