Thailand evacuates first batch of nationals from Iran

BANGKOK, March 9 — Thailand has brought home the first batch of 29 nationals evacuated from Iran, who arrived at Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok today, said Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow.

The Thai Embassy in Tehran coordinated their journey from Iran to Turkiye, with the evacuees travelling by road for more than 10 hours before crossing the Turkish border and flying to Thailand via Istanbul.

“Today, 29 people have arrived, and another 23 are expected tomorrow,” he told the press at the airport.

He added that the Thai Embassy in Tehran will evacuate another group of about 75 Thai nationals tomorrow. They will travel by car from Tehran along the same route to the Turkish border, then fly to Thailand.

The government is encouraging other Thai nationals remaining in Iran to leave the country for their safety amid escalating tensions.

“We understand that some wish to remain, while others are students who prefer to continue their studies. Ultimately, it is their personal decision whether to stay or leave.

"We are not forcing anyone to leave, but we will provide assistance to ensure they can travel safely if they choose to do so," Sihasak said.

Bangkok continues to assist Thai nationals seeking to leave the area, including securing seats on commercial flights via Dubai when available.

“So far, more than 100 Thai nationals have returned,” he said.
