SHAH ALAM, March 6 — The government is currently prioritising the strengthening of existing public transport services, including improving bus services and introducing Demand Responsive Transit (DRT), rather than building a new MRT link connecting Kajang, Bangi, and Putrajaya, said Transport Minister Anthony Loke.
This approach aims to improve connectivity between residential areas, institutions, and commercial centres with nearby rail stations.
“Based on the current assessment, the priority approach is to strengthen the existing public transport network through improvements to bus services and the implementation of DRT to enhance connectivity between residential areas, educational institutions, commercial centres, and nearby rail stations,” he said in a written reply to the Dewan Negara today.
Loke was responding to Senator Mohammad Redzuan Othman’s query on whether the government planned to complete a circular MRT connection from Kajang through Bangi to Putrajaya, given the rapid population growth and development around the Federal administrative centre.
He added that the ministry is continuously reviewing mobility needs in high-growth areas such as Bangi and its surrounding areas near Putrajaya.
In 2022, it approved a public transport study covering Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, Bangi, and Kajang to assess current needs, future demand projections, and possible improvements to the public transport system in the corridor.
Meanwhile, Loke said Rapid KL had introduced Bus Route 451 in 2023, linking Kajang Station to Putrajaya via Bandar Baru Bangi to provide more direct access and assess passenger demand.
However, the route was discontinued on February 14 this year due to low ridership.
“The government will continue to monitor local development to ensure that mobility solutions implemented are sustainable, cost-effective, and meet the needs of residents,” he said.
