SHAH ALAM, March 5 — KDEB Waste Management Sdn Bhd (KDEBWM) is taking proactive measures to ensure efficient waste collection in Selangor, following operational disruptions in several areas, including Selayang and Kuala Selangor, over the past few weeks.
Its managing director, Dato' Ramli Mohd Tahir, said the disruptions occurred while operational adjustments were being carried out to reorganise the solid waste collection system to make it more systematic
"First of all, I would like to apologise if there have been disruptions or inefficiencies in waste collection in recent weeks. These are due to several factors that are being addressed to ensure our waste collection system improves," he told Media Selangor.
He said delays in Kuala Selangor occurred following the expiry of the previous waste collection contract, before the new contract could be fully implemented.
"When a contract ends, there will typically be slight disruptions at the operations level. The transition to a new contract can cause operational instability at the initial phase, before it stabilises."
In Selayang, Ramli said an increase in waste volume during Ramadan, especially from bazaar activities and food businesses, has also affected collection schedule.
He said the closure of the landfill site in Kuang has made matters more challenging, as lorries now have to transport waste to the more distant facility in Jeram.
"This has led to an increase in travelling time, affecting the number of trips that can be made in a day."

Ramli added that the poor condition of roads to the landfill has caused some lorries to break down, including suspension failures or getting stuck.
However, he said operations are now much more stable following repair works.
Ramli also explained that the takeover of waste collection in new areas like Kajang, Sepang, and Kuala Selangor requires time for operators to learn the routes and streamline collection schedules.
“Once all new lorries are fully operational and assets are complete, waste collection operations will stabilise, preventing the recurrence of uncollected waste issues,” he said.
Previously, Selayang Municipal Council (MPS) Zone 10 Councillor Ahmad Zahiri Zahid Sofian lamented the rise in public complaints over inconsistent collection schedules over the past few weeks.
He urged for better monitoring, including regular performance audit of KDEBWM, to ensure service standards are maintained.
