Raub fire victims laid to rest in sombre farewell

RAUB, Feb 27 — The remains of a family of five who died in a house fire in Kampung Pamah Kulat early yesterday morning were laid to rest at the Bukit Gelugor Muslim Cemetery at approximately 11.45 pm last night.

The deceased — Mohd Alawi Muhammad, 56, his wife Zaleha Adam @ Ibrahim, 44, and their three daughters Ruby Adira Batrisya, 17, Ruby Adlina Banin, 14, and Ruby Azyan Barizah, 10 — were buried together in a single grave.

Five vans carrying the bodies arrived at the cemetery at 10.48 pm following post-mortem procedures and cleansing at the Raub Hospital Forensic Unit, and funeral prayers at the Tengku Abdullah Mosque in Kampung Pamah Kulat.

The funeral was conducted in a calm and somber atmosphere, attended by about 500 people consisting of family members, relatives, and villagers who came to pay their last respects.

The eldest child of the family, Ruby Adalia Balqis Mohd Alawi (in black) watches as the bodies of her parents and siblings are lowered into the grave at the Bukit Gelugor Muslim Cemetery in Raub near midnight on February 26, 2026.

The fire, which occurred around 3.00 am, claimed the lives of the five family members. However, two of the couple's other children survived because they were not at home: Ruby Adalia Balqis, 19, a matriculation student in Gambang, Kuantan, and Ahmad Balia Murqam, 15, a student at SMK Dong.

Pahang Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Datuk Mohd Razam Taja Rahim said that the fire completely destroyed the house and burnt three cars and three motorcycles.
