Azam Baki gives statement on shareholding allegations

PUTRAJAYA, Feb 22 — Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki was summoned to give his statement on February 19 over issues related to his share ownership.

Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said the Special Investigation Committee probing the matter had met on Thursday and, based on the preliminary report received, is reviewing the compliance and propriety of Azam’s share ownership.

“The committee is also still in the process of evaluating all the evidence that has been obtained and will call other relevant witnesses to complete the investigation.

“The committee gives assurance that a comprehensive investigation will be carried out transparently, independently and professionally,” he said in a statement today.

Shamsul Azri also said the results of the investigation and recommendations for further action will be presented to the authorities, including if any violations of any criminal laws or regulations are found to have occurred.

Previously, it was reported that Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar was appointed as the chairman of the special committee.

Other members are the Public Service director-general Tan Sri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz and Treasury secretary-general Datuk Johan Mahmood Merican.

Bloomberg, in a report, claimed that Azam owns shares in a financial services company based on corporate filings.

However, Azam said a press conference that his shareholding worth RM800,000 was made transparently and according to procedures.
