Amirudin to discuss objections to Port Klang expansion with excos

SHAH ALAM, Feb 11 — Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari today said he would, at an Selangor State Executive Council meeting, communicate objections raised by a Sungai Kurau Orang Asli community over the proposed expansion of Port Klang.

“I will (bring it up) at the state executive council meeting later,” he told reporters when met at the MBSA Convention Centre here after handing over Ramadan bazaar permits to traders.

Previously, Orang Asli residents in Sungai Kurau, Kuala Langat, protested the port expansion project, which they claimed could compromise local fishermen’s livelihoods.

The Selangor government has identified nearly 1,700ha of shoreline and offshore land to house the Terminal 3 project, which is part of plans to expand Port Klang.

In December, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the project must be expedited while ensuring sustainability and the rights of Orang Asli, other residents, and fishermen.

In a Facebook statement, he had said the project has been delayed for years and shouldn’t be further postponed.

Anwar added that federal and state leaders had reached a consensus to move the expansion plan forward as a strategic investment that could improve national competitiveness and generate opportunities for the local community.
