SHAH ALAM, Feb 8 — The Selangor Muay Thai Association hopes for funding support from the state government and sponsorship from the private sector to strengthen the sport's development in the state.

Its president Muhammad Amir Luqman Rohaidi said continuous support is crucial as Selangor is still at an early stage of developing the sport compared with other states.

“Therefore, sustained support is very much needed to ensure that this sport can grow in a more systematic manner.

“We hope there will be funding allocations from the state government as well as sponsorship support to enable the development of muay thai in Selangor to be carried out more comprehensively,” he told Media Selangor during the Selangor Muay Thai League 1.0 Championship yesterday, which was officiated by the state executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi.

Amir added that the Selangor Muay Thai League 1.0 was the organisation's inaugural league, in collaboration with the state government via the Selangor Sports Council (MSN).

The championship serves as an important platform to identify and hone new talent, with participants aged between seven and 30 years, covering weight categories from 20kg to 95kg.

“Organising this league aims to provide early exposure to athletes, while also serving as a healthy competitive arena to identify the true potential of Selangor’s muay thai talent,” he said.

Similarly, Amir is positive that the target of four gold medals in muay thai during the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) 2026, to be held in Selangor in August, can be realised.

“Selangor has many talented and high-quality athletes. With thorough preparation and sufficient support, I am confident this target can be achieved,” he said.
