KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 7 — The government has agreed to provide a 50 per cent toll discount on February 14 and 15 for Chinese New Year, said Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi.
He said the discount will be effective from 12.01am on February 14 to 11.59pm on February 15, with financial implications of RM19.5 million in compensation to highway concessionaires.
The decision was agreed upon at yesterday’s Cabinet meeting, in line with the government’s efforts to ensure the unity and well-being of Malaysians of various races and religions.
“The discount is expected to ease travel costs for those returning to their hometowns or holidaying during the festive period, as well as ahead of Ramadan,” he said in a statement today.
Nanta added that the initiative applies to Class 1 (private) vehicles at all toll plazas and Class 2 vehicles on the Penang bridge, but excludes toll plazas at the country’s borders, namely, the Sultan Iskandar Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex on the North-South Expressway (PLUS) and the Tanjung Kupang Toll Plaza on the Malaysia-Singapore Second Link (LINKEDUA).
He said these dates were chosen to prevent traffic congestion while optimising operations and coordinating additional logistics at rest stops.
He advised highway users to plan their journeys carefully, comply with speed limits and road signs, and use the MyPLUS-TTA and TuJu Highway Navigation apps for recommended travel times.
Nanta also recommended that road users check real-time traffic updates on the Malaysian Highway Authority’s (LLM) official channels or contact its Traffic Management Centre for current information.
