Magnitude 6.4 earthquake strikes off Pacitan, seven injured

JAKARTA, Feb 6 — A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck off the coast of Pacitan, East Java, early today, injuring at least seven people and damaging several houses in parts of East Java and Yogyakarta.

The National Disaster Management Agency's (BNPB) Disaster Data, Information and Communication Centre head Abdul Muhari said the earthquake occured at 1.06am local time, with its epicentre located in the sea at a depth of 10km, about 90km southeast of Pacitan.

“The tremor was also felt in surrounding areas, including Trenggalek, Gunungkidul, Bantul, and Yogyakarta,” he said in a statement, adding that there were no tsunami threats.

The quake was felt strongly for two to three seconds, triggering panic among residents, and initial reports indicated that at least four households were affected.

Muhari said that local disaster management agencies had been deployed to monitor the situation and conduct rapid assessments, while residents have been advised to remain calm, stay alert for possible aftershocks, and avoid damaged structures.
