SHAH ALAM, Jan 31 — The Thaipusam celebration not only holds deep significance for the Indian community, but also stands as a symbol of unity, religious freedom and harmony among Selangor’s multiracial society, said Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

In a Facebook post, Amirudin said Thaipusam is a highly significant celebration for the Indian community in Selangor and Malaysia, especially as attention from across the country and abroad turns to the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple in Batu Caves.

He said that, as the Gombak MP and Sungai Tua state assemblyman, the celebration carries special meaning for him as Batu Caves serves as the main focal point of the annual observance.

He added that Thaipusam is celebrated as a symbol of sacrifice to overcome desires and negative traits in order to defeat evil, including through fasting, carrying the kavadi and fulfilling vows to Lord Murugan.

“In a society with diverse beliefs, Selangor remains steadfast in upholding the dignity and freedom of religion, as well as the customs and traditions of its multiracial communities," he said today.

Amirudin said Thaipusam is a celebration that not only draws Hindu devotees, but also tourists who are eager to see the uniqueness of the festival — the second biggest for Hindus after Deepavali.

In this regard, Amirudin called on all parties to continue fostering the values of unity, mutual respect and tolerance to ensure Selangor remains peaceful and prosperous.

He also extended his wishes for a meaningful observance and a Happy Thaipusam to all involved, expressing hope that the festive spirit would further strengthen bonds and bring well-being to everyone.

Yesterday, Amirudin accompanied Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on a site visit, in conjunction with the state-level Thaipusam celebration, which will be held at the Sri Subramaniar Swamy Temple today.
