SHAH ALAM, Jan 30 — Another fire broke out at the illegal landfill on Jalan Cemerlang, Sungai Tangkas, Kajang, with offenders also having cut CCTV wires in the latest incident.
Bandar Baru Bangi Fire and Rescue Station deputy firefighter enforcer II Khairuddin Jamaluddin said the blaze is believed to have been caused by recyclables pickers who set fire to trash heaps to obtain copper wires, and could have been exacerbated by the hot weather and nearly two weeks without rain.
“The fire involved an illegal landfill on a slope with a river tributary at the bottom, with the level of burning estimated to have reached 80 per cent, involving domestic and construction waste.
“Extinguishing operations took three days and 16 personnel, and the fire was put out on January 28,” Khairuddin told Media Selangor.
On Monday, Bangi MP Syahredzan Johan in a Facebook post said the Sungai Tangkas landfill was on fire, mere months after the last blaze.
He said a CCTV was installed in the area, but due to irresponsible parties damaging the device, no evidence could be gleaned about the most recent fire.
On June 27 last year, Media Selangor reported on recurring open fires at illegal landfills in Sungai Tangkas.
Syahredzan had said the long-standing issue needs a comprehensive solution, and suggested installing CCTVs to aid monitoring and enforcement.
