KUALA LANGAT, Jan 29 — KDEB Waste Management (KDEBWM), together with the Kuala Langat District Education Office (PPD), has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to expand the implementation of the Selangor Recycling Programme (SELKitar) in the district.
The Kuala Langat Municipal Council (MPKL) said that under the collaboration, SELKitar will be implemented in 30 schools and higher education institutions within its administrative area throughout this year.
“The programme includes briefing sessions and awareness talks, the organisation of exhibitions at five selected schools, as well as the opening of MPKL Eco Cash counters to facilitate the collection and sale of recyclable materials by the school community.
“A total of four secondary schools, 21 national primary schools, and five higher education institutions are participating in this programme through the collaboration between KDEBWM and the Kuala Langat PPD,” it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, KDEBWM managing director Dato’ Ramli Mohd Tahir said that each school and higher education institution participating in SELKitar will be provided with a set of recycling bins and a cash incentive of RM300 to promote recycling.
“The 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) recycling bin incentive is provided in a smaller size to make it easier and more systematic for them to collect recyclable materials in their respective schools.
“By having these cute-looking bins, they will attract attention and help educate schoolchildren to separate materials such as plastics, paper, high-density polythene (HDPE), and polyphenylene ether (PPE),” he told the media after the SELKitar MPKL launch ceremony.
In April last year, the State Executive Council (MMKN) approved a RM30,000 allocation to each of Selangor's 12 local authorities to implement recycling programmes at the community level.

During the event, MPKL Deputy President Ahmad Zaki Yusof said the council collected 33,366kg of recyclable materials via SELKitar in the district last year.
The operations involved 35,351 housing units and 100 residential areas within MPKL’s administrative jurisdiction.
“Of the total amount collected, the largest volume of recyclable material was paper at approximately 19,942kg, followed by cardboard (7,862kg), and plastic (5,297kg).
“Other materials collected included aluminium, iron, and metal. For 2025, the total collection recorded amounted to 1,827.73 tonnes,” he told Media Selangor.
Zaki added that to ensure the programme's continuity and facilitate residents’ access, SELKitar is implemented monthly at key locations.
It is held in the third week of every month at Pasar Awam Banting, while Dataran Medan Selera Batu Laut serves as the implementation site during the first week of each month.
“MPKL also supports the used clothing recycling initiative through the placement of Used Clothing Recycling Bins by the Malaysian Recycling Charity Association.
“43 bins have been placed around the Kuala Langat district, with the collection of used clothing recorded at 35,115kg,” he said.
