Local authorities should prepare local review reports to strengthen governance

SHAH ALAM, Jan 29 — Selangor's local authorities are encouraged to prepare Voluntary Local Review (VLR) reports on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in line with their respective administrations, said Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

The preparation of such reports, similar to the ones undertaken by the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA), demonstrates the local authorities' commitment to implementing the 2030 sustainable development agenda while ensuring more inclusive governance.

“This report shows the readiness of local authorities to comply with SDG guidelines, including those related to poverty and infrastructure provision. Each local authority has a different focus, whether in education, poverty, or other issues.

“So far, there are local authorities that are preparing the report for the first time, and we encourage this. However, such reporting is not easy as it adds to the existing workload,” he said.

Amirudin was speaking to the media during today's launch and presentation of the Second Series Shah Alam SDG VLR report.

During the event, MBSA published its second VLR report, following its first presentation in 2021, which documented various achievements.

The document compiled the latest progress, strategic achievements, and continuous improvement efforts in implementing SDGs in Shah Alam.

In his speech, the Menteri Besar said that the publication of the VLR report also helps local authorities assess the level of governance sustainability in their respective areas.

“It is not merely a tool to measure capability, but also helps to strengthen governance and provide clearer administrative direction. When people's quality of life improves, local authorities will be more respected.

“At the same time, councillors, officers, and appointed community representatives must work closely with local authorities so that plans can be implemented and their benefits enjoyed by the people,” Amirudin said.

Meanwhile, Shah Alam Deputy Mayor Safriah Md Adzhar said the second series VLR report will be presented at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum in New York, the United States, this coming July.

“The proactive efforts and achievements of MBSA served as a catalyst for the publication of this second series report, which was approved by the State Planning Committee in July last year.

“Through this report, MBSA is able to map city policies, programmes and initiatives against SDG indicators, while identifying strengths and gaps for improvement,” she said.
