MACC says two top military ex-officers to be charged this week

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 21 — A former senior officer of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) and his wife will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Special Corruption Court tomorrow.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) said former army chief Tan Sri Hafizuddeain Jantan and his wife Salwani Anuar will each face four charges under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

According to MACC, 58-year-old Hafizuddeain will face two additional charges under the same section and act at the Shah Alam Special Corruption Court on Friday, while his wife will be charged with one additional charge under the same provision at the Jertih Sessions Court in Terengganu on January 26.

Meanwhile, former chief of defence force Tan Sri Mohd Nizam Jaffar will be charged at the Kuala Lumpur Special Corruption Court on Friday. He is set to face two charges under Section 23 of the MACC Act 2009 over alleged abuses of power involving the Armed Forces Welfare Fund (TKAT), and one count of criminal breach of trust under Section 409 and one count under Section 165 of the Penal Code.

“MACC would also like to inform that investigations into two other senior Malaysian Armed Forces officers are in the final stages, and the investigation papers will be submitted to the deputy public prosecutor (DPP) soon for further action,” the commission said in a statement.

MACC reiterated its firm commitment to ensuring corruption offences are dealt with decisively, transparently and without compromise, in accordance with the principles of the rule of law.

Under Op Parasit, MACC detained a senior officer and his two wives on January 7, in connection with the procurement of army projects. The following day, the officer was remanded for seven days, while his wives were remanded for three and six days, respectively.

The MACC investigation into the case began on October 7, 2025, and is classified as sensitive due to its involvement of high-ranking officers and matters of public interest.

On December 23, 2025, a team of MACC officers arrived at the Defence Ministry (MINDEF) to conduct preliminary investigations into several army-related projects dating back to 2023.

On January 15, media reports said 23 people, including two high-ranking officers and four senior Malaysian Armed Forces officers, have been detained by the MACC over corruption and abuse of power allegations, involving procurement matters and the use of public funds, as well as claims of receiving bribes from several companies linked to procurement for TKAT and MINDEF.
