LUAS ramps up collaboration with unis to boost water resource management

SHAH ALAM, Jan 21 — The Selangor Water Management Authority (LUAS) is strengthening its strategic collaborations with universities and other education institutions in its research and field studies to improve the state’s water management resilience.

In a statement today, LUAS said the collaborations cover hydrology modelling, early pollution detection, and the development of more efficient monitoring methods in line with the use of Internet of Things (IoT).

“In the context of climate change and the emergence of new pollution threats, these collaborations are important to support long-term adaptation planning, including flood and drought risk management and the continuous protection of Selangor’s water resources,” it added.

Besides academic institutions, LUAS is also focusing on cross-agency, industry and local community cooperation to ensure more holistic, integrated water source management.

According to LUAS, findings from academic institutions, consultants and internal monitoring will be comprehensively assessed from the aspects of operational usability, impact on water quality, and suitability with existing legislative frameworks.

Field data collected would function as confirmation mechanisms to ensure research results are aligned with reality and can be implemented practically to prevent gaps between scientific analyses and real action.

“Relevant findings will be translated into improvements of standard operating procedures, technical guidelines, water resource management governance, and input for state policymaking,” read the statement.

Meanwhile, Universiti Malaya’s Institute of Ocean and Earth Sciences associate member Prof Mohamad Pauzi Zakaria said research support is the right move to ensure water resources are free of prohibited material, improve clean water supply, and support industry needs.

“Strong research support and commitment from all quarters including the state government can help address security, quality, and water resource sustainability issues,” he said.

Previously, LUAS said it would continue backing academic research on water resource management through field studies and water sample obtention statewide.

LUAS also encouraged stakeholders, especially university students, to explore studies in state water resources to strengthen their research experience and understand LUAS’ role as Selangor’s water resource manager.
