AMPANG JAYA, Jan 20 — The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) will install more Early Warning System (EWS) alarms at high-risk slopes to proactively monitor soil movement and lower landslide risks, said MPAJ deputy president Hasrolnizam Shaari.

He added that the system has been installed at several locations including Bukit Antarabangsa and Bukit Teratai.

Hasrolnizam said it involves the setup of monitoring instruments that can measure weather data, especially real-time rainfall.

He explained that data from the system, which uses current technology and artificial intelligence (AI), can then inform risk levels to produce early warnings and allow authorities to act sooner in cases of slope movement or landslides.

“We have started installing several soil movement risk-monitoring devices. The instruments (measure) weather (data, such as) if there is unusual rain or high rainfall.

“It measures in real time the rate of rain and translates it into types of risk, which would notify parties we deem necessary, (for them) to immediately monitor,” he said when met after a site visit to Jalan Saga 17, Taman Bukit Teratai here today.

Hasrolnizam said MPAJ plans to expand the EWS to other high-risk locations, including development and construction sites with slopes.

“This year, we are trial testing with various target groups, the community, and relevant agencies, for us to deliver briefings in these six months about the system.

“With that start, we will also expand it to various (related endeavours) — among them development or construction projects, developers in areas with slopes — we will ask them to integrate and install similar devices to link to our existing system,” he added.

Previously, MPAJ said all new developments in hilly areas around Ampang Jaya must host EWS equipment to gain building approvals, effective November.
