SHAH ALAM, Jan 16 — The Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court heard today that a student accused of murdering a schoolmate at a Bandar Utama secondary school in October last year is fit to stand trial.
Lawyer Kitson Foong, who represented the 15-year-old accused, said this when met outside the court today after closed proceedings before magistrate Amira Sariaty Zainal, reported Sinar Harian.
Foong said the decision was made after Hospital Bahagia Ulu Kinta psychiatric consultant Dr Ian Lloyd Anthony performed a three-month assessment on the accused juvenile’s mental status.
“The report confirmed the accused is capable of understanding the proceedings and able to defend himself in the case against him.
“That is the most important thing for the prosecution so this case would continue,” Foong said.
He added that while awaiting trial, his client would be placed at the Puncak Alam Correctional Centre juvenile detention facility.
Foong said the court has ordered that the 15-year-old student attend counselling and therapy sessions once a month.
The court has set February 6 for the case remention.
The accused is alleged to have murdered a 16-year-old girl in the toilet of a secondary school in Bandar Utama, Petaling Jaya, between 9.20am and 9.35am on October 14 last year.
He was charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of hanging or life or a certain period in prison, if convicted.
In the attack, the victim was found dead in the school toilet, and was suspected of having been stabbed multiple times.
During today’s proceedings, prosecution was handled by deputy public prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharudin, while lawyer Nur Izni Syazwani Ahmad appeared as an observing attorney for the victim’s mother.
