KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 13 — Three victims involved in an explosion at a private university in the capital yesterday are still receiving treatment in the hospital, said Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus.

The first victim is a 54-year-old contractor who is being treated at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital (HKL) after sustaining injuries from metal fragments embedded in her body as well as burns, but her condition is reported to be stable and under medical observation.

He said the second victim is a 19-year-old female student who is still unconscious and is receiving intensive care treatment at the same hospital after suffering internal bleeding in the brain and a cracked skull as a result of the incident.

“The third victim, a 22-year-old Indonesian man who works as a canteen worker at the university, is being treated at the Sungai Buloh Hospital for observation despite not sustaining serious injuries, while six other victims have been allowed to return home,” Fadil said when contacted today.

He added that further investigations into the cause of the incident are ongoing by the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM), and the police will update the public on the latest developments from time to time.

Yesterday, it was reported that a man was confirmed dead while receiving treatment at HKL, while nine others were injured in the air-conditioning gas explosion at a private university at 11.40am.

The deceased was identified as Soo Yu Juan, 24, a third-year Mechanical Engineering student from Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR).

Fadil said the explosion occurred in an air-conditioning maintenance area adjacent to a cafeteria on the fourth floor of the university.
