Dry spell forecast in northern Malaysia, thunderstorm in western peninsula

SHAH ALAM, Jan 12 — A period of hot and dry weather is predicted to affect most parts of the country, particularly the northern region of Peninsular Malaysia, until Sunday (January 18), said the Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia).

This is based on analysis from weather forecasting models.

"However, short-duration thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds are still likely to occur, especially in the western parts of the peninsula and in Sarawak during the late afternoon and early evening,” it said in brief statement posted on social media today.

For the latest and verified weather updates, the public is encouraged to refer to the official website at www.met.gov.my, follow its official social media platforms, and download the myCuaca app.

Previously, MetMalaysia said the 2025/2026 northeast monsoon was expected to begin in November last year and persist until March, with five to seven episodes of continuous heavy rain predicted during the period.
