JAKARTA, Jan 8 — The Indonesian government has vowed to seize an additional four to five million hectares of illegal oil palm plantations as part of intensified efforts to combat illegal activities and corruption.

President Prabowo Subianto said the authorities have confiscated about four million hectares of oil palm plantations found to be operating in violation of the law so far.

Besides oil palm plantations, the authorities have also taken action against hundreds of illegal mining operations, saving the country hundreds of trillions of rupiah.

However, he said significant leakages remain, urging Cabinet ministers, government officials and the public to join hands in supporting the effort.

“We are fighting corruption, eradicating abuses, and upholding the law – do not hesitate,” Prabowo said in his speech at a harvest event in Karawang, West Java, today.

Last year, Jakarta seized over four million hectares of land allegedly used for illegal mining, oil palm planting and forestry activities, with an estimated value of 150 trillion rupiah (RM36.2 billion).

On a separate note, he said the government plans to develop 1,100 fishing villages in 2026 as part of the target to boost marine production.
