AMPANG JAYA, Jan 4 — The Ampang Jaya Municipal Council's (MPAJ) newly appointed councillors for the 2026/2027 term are committed to upgrading ageing infrastructure and addressing flood issues within their administrative areas.

DAP chief whip Lee Wen Bin, representing the councillors, said that among his priorities is upgrading residential areas that are over 30 years old, in line with population growth in the Teratai state constituency.

He also aims to address drainage and river systems that are no longer able to cope with large volumes of water during heavy rainfall.

“The Teratai area, particularly Taman Muda, Taman Seraya, and Taman Putra, has been identified as areas that have yet to receive comprehensive infrastructure upgrades.

“Many roads and drains were built more than three decades ago and are no longer suitable for current conditions. I will raise this matter at council meetings so that upgrades can be carried out to address flash flood issues,” Lee said.

Representing Zone 22, he was among the councillors who took their oath of office before MPAJ Deputy President Hasrolnizam Shaari at Menara MPAJ on Friday (January 2).

Lee added that six DAP councillors were appointed for this term, including two youth representatives and three women, thereby fulfilling the 30 per cent quota for women’s participation among the total 24 MPAJ councillors.

Meanwhile, Zone 8 councillor Datuk Yap Wee Seng said his primary focus is to strengthen engagement with residents to ensure more effective service delivery, particularly involving basic infrastructure.

“Attention will be given to public facilities like drains, roads, and street lighting in the Kampung Baru Ampang and Kampung Melayu areas.

“These infrastructure issues have persisted for a long time and need to be addressed comprehensively to make Ampang Jaya a harmonious and competitive area,” he said.

Yap, who is also Parti Keadilan Rakyat's chief whip, said 11 party councillors were appointed for this term.

“Six new councillors and five incumbents were appointed, with some of them having backgrounds in engineering and administration,” he said.

Parti Amanah councillor and chief whip Nur Sakinah Mohd Yusoff said her focus is on coordinating infrastructure development in Zone 15 following the construction of two new Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) stations in Kampung Pandan and Taman Bakti.

“Existing development plans need to be reviewed to ensure they are aligned with these public transport developments.

“Kampung Pandan is an established area, and the current Ampang Jaya 2030 Development Plan does not fully take MRT readiness into account. Therefore, we need to reassess the planning so that area development keeps pace with current needs,” she said.

Representing Zone 15, Sakinah noted that Amanah's quota of councillor appointments remains at seven for this term, with three from Lembah Jaya, two from Hulu Kelang, and two from Pandan Indah.
