SHAH ALAM, Dec 31 — Selangor will step up efforts to raise awareness of organ donation to increase the number of donors, in line with the Health Ministry's (MOH) national agenda, which continues to face low participation rates.

State executive councillor for public health and the environment Jamaliah Jamaluddin said that organ donation will become one of the core pillars of Selangor's health policy beginning in 2026, in keeping with the state government’s commitment to strengthening the people's overall well-being.

“The initiative also takes into account the still-low rate of organ donation in the country, which requires attention and coordinated action at all levels. The planned campaigns will not only focus on donor registration but also emphasise public awareness to ensure families respect an individual’s wish to donate their organs.

“We (the state government) support the Federal government’s intention because this matter is indeed important and requires a shared commitment,” she said.

Previously, Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad said that organ transplantation would be restructured as a national agenda, in line with the MOH’s efforts to reorganise the National Transplant Centre (NTC) as the central body to drive nationwide policy, administration, and coordination.

In addition, strengthening adolescent mental health via the Selangor Mental Health Programme (SEHAT), including the implementation of the Peer-Z pilot programme in selected schools as an early intervention based on peer support, will also be part of the state government's focus.

“Trained peers will assist students facing emotional stress, before being referred to school counsellors or mental health professionals if further intervention is required,” Jamaliah told Media Selangor.

The councillor added that public access to healthcare will continue to be safeguarded through the continuation of various existing initiatives, including Iltizam Selangor Sihat (ISS), Bantuan Sihat Selangor (BSS), Selangor Saring, Selangor Kanser, Skim Rawatan Jantung, Anak Selangor Anak Sihat (ASAS), and the Selangor Life Insurance Scheme (SLIM).

Simultaneously, aspects of elderly healthcare will be strengthened, including regular screenings, physiotherapy, and more systematic follow-up, while early prevention campaigns, such as raising awareness of the dangers of electronic cigarettes or vaping among adolescents, will continue.

Commenting on the sustainability agenda, she said Selangor will introduce the Rakan Bumi Programme and further intensify plastic-free campaigns as part of the state’s commitment to environmental conservation.

Jamaliah emphasised that all these initiatives reflect the state government’s resolve to build a healthcare system that is more inclusive, resilient, and sustainable for the well-being of Selangor's residents.
