SHAH ALAM, Dec 26 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) is prepared to implement the sustainability fee for tourists that will take effect statewide beginning January 1.
Klang Mayor Datuk Abd Hamid Hussain said the council fully supports the initiative, which helps cover the costs of developing and maintaining tourism infrastructure, in addition to enhancing the overall quality of the tourist experience in the state.
“The sustainability fee will also be used to fund environmental conservation initiatives and ensure the long-term viability and sustainability of the tourism industry in Selangor,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian at the council's full board meeting on Wednesday.
Hamid said the local authority will work closely with relevant agencies and accommodation operators to ensure the smooth implementation of the fee, in compliance with the prescribed guidelines.
“This effort is in line with the state government’s aspiration to strengthen Selangor’s image as a sustainable and responsible tourism destination, in accordance with the National Tourism Policy 2020–2030,” he added.
On November 21, state executive councillor for local government and tourism Dato' Ng Suee Lim announced that the state government will introduce a sustainability fee for tourists starting January 1, 2026, in line with similar initiatives implemented in other states.
He said the fee is aimed at supporting environmental sustainability and preserving the state’s natural and cultural assets.
Ng added that hotels will act as intermediaries for collection, while local authorities will manage coordination, collection, and administration of the fund.
The initial discussion structure for the fees are RM7 per night for five-star hotels, RM5 for three-star accommodations, RM3 for other hotels, and RM2 for homestays and similar lodgings.
The fee will also apply to campsites and accommodation vehicles such as campervans, which will be charged RM3 per night.
In addition, accommodation premises registered under programmes organised by the Tourism, Arts and Culture Ministry (Motac) will be subject to a sustainability fee of RM3 per room per night.
