SHAH ALAM, Dec 23 — Yayasan Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) or MBI has disbursed RM21,000 in wakalah zakat to 11 recipients, comprising educational and medical assistance as well as support for university students and promising athletes.
The foundation's head Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor said the contribution was channelled to zakat asnaf (Islamic tithe recipients), particularly under the fisabilillah category, involving school and university students who require financial assistance to continue their studies.
Aid was also extended to athletes who have demonstrated commendable achievements at the state and national levels.
“This contribution aims to help ease the burden on recipients, ensure that students are able to continue their studies more effectively, and provide moral and financial support to athletes so that they do not give up and can remain competitive in their respective sports,” he said after Yayasan MBI's contribution presentation ceremony at Bangunan Darul Ehsan today.
Azri added that the distribution forms part of the wakalah zakat mechanism arising from MBI’s annual zakat payments to the Selangor Zakat Board (LZS), whereby 50 per cent of the total zakat paid is returned to MBI for direct distribution to eligible asnaf.
“MBI consistently fulfils its zakat obligation with an annual amount of around RM2 million. Beginning this year, half of the zakat payment is channelled back to MBI to enable more targeted and high-impact distribution,” he said.
Each wakalah zakat distribution is determined through the MBI Zakat Management Working Committee, which assesses applications based on need, eligibility, and the potential impact of the assistance on recipients.
“To date, more than 100 recipients have benefited from MBI’s wakalah zakat, involving individual recipients, mosques, and educational institutions, with contribution amounts ranging from RM500 to RM100,000 depending on category and current needs.
“This approach reflects the commitment of the Selangor government and MBI, as a state government-linked entity with strong financial standing, in fulfilling their social responsibility, particularly in ensuring the welfare of zakat asnaf is safeguarded and that human capital development continues to be strengthened,” Azri said.
