KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 18 — The National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) is coordinating immediate action with relevant agencies in six flood-hit states, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
He said this includes early short message service (SMS) emergency announcements by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and welfare aid and necessities by the Social Welfare Department (JKM).
Other measures, he added, include the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) operating the emergency pumps to control water levels and reduce the risk of flooding.
“I am deeply affected by the floods that have hit several states and by the plight of the victims. Please pray that this disaster will subside quickly and that victims can return to their normal lives.
“The public is advised to always be alert, complying with instructions from the authorities and quickly evacuate to the temporary relief centres when instructed for their own safety and that of their families,” he posted on Facebook.
Anwar also expressed his appreciation and gratitude to frontliners and volunteers who continue to help flood victims.
Based on the latest data from the National Disaster Control Centre (NDCC) as at 8pm today, the six flood-hit states are Selangor, Pahang, Terengganu, Kelantan, Johor and Sarawak, with 13,419 victims sheltering in 95 centres.
