SHAH ALAM, Sept 2 — Seventy-seven Malaysians who escaped the devastating Nepal-China flood have been sent to Kathmandu and will come home soon, said Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil.
He said the Cabinet was earlier briefed on the Nepal-China flash flood by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, adding it was informed of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s approval of RM4.3 million to support humanitarian efforts in Nepal.
“The foreign minister informed the Cabinet that 55 Malaysians are still unaccounted for, while 77 Malaysians have been located in Tibet and Nepal.
“The 77 Malaysians have been sent to Kathmandu … to be brought (home) to Malaysia,” he said during the weekly press conference at the ministry’s headquarters in Putrajaya today.
“The Cabinet will continue to monitor developments involving Malaysians affected by the situation, including efforts to locate those who are still unaccounted for,” he said.
Floods and landslides struck Nepal’s Rasuwa district on August 26 following a catastrophic glacier collapse in the Himalayas, levelling infrastructure and leaving thousands dead or missing.
Search-and-rescue efforts are ongoing.
