Japan quake: No Malaysians affected so far — Wisma Putra

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 9 — There are no reports of Malaysians affected by the 7.5-magnitude earthquake that struck northeastern Japan yesterday, said the Foreign Ministry.

The ministry, known as Wisma Putra, said it is monitoring the situation through the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo.

“There are no reports of Malaysians affected by the earthquake. The embassy remains in close communication with local authorities and is monitoring developments closely,” said Wisma Putra in a statement today.

The earthquake occurred at 11.15pm at a depth of 54km, about 80km off the coast of Aomori prefecture.

Tsunami warnings were issued but have since been lifted.

Wisma Putra advised Malaysians in the affected areas to remain vigilant, avoid coastal regions, and follow official guidance from Japanese authorities.

“Malaysians are also strongly encouraged to register their presence with the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo to ensure timely communication and assistance when required,” it added.

For consular assistance, Malaysians may contact the Malaysian Embassy in Tokyo via phone at +81-3-3476-3840 (general enquiries) or +81-80-4322-3366 (emergencies only), or via email at consular.tyo@kln.gov.my.
