PUTRAJAYA, June 25 — Malaysians in Venezuela who are registered with Wisma Putra are safe and accounted for, after two powerful earthquakes struck central Venezuela yesterday, the Foreign Ministry said.
In a statement today, it said it is monitoring developments following the temblors, which measured 7.2 and 7.5 on the Richter scale.
Wisma Putra said Venezuelan authorities are assessing the situation and have yet to determine the number of casualties and extent of damage.
“The embassy remains in close communication with local authorities and continues to monitor the situation,” the statement read.
Wisma Putra said Malaysians residing in or visiting the affected areas are strongly advised to be careful, stay alert, and adhere to safety directives by local emergency services.
It also urged Malaysians who are not registered in its database to do so immediately on e-Konsular.
It urged Malaysians needing consular assistance or wishing to provide information on other Malaysians who may be in the affected areas to call the Malaysian Embassy in Caracas at (+58-212) 720 4257 or (+58-424) 222 1338, or email mwcaracas@kln.gov.my.
The earthquakes struck about 21km away from Moron and 168km west of Caracas.
The tremors were felt across the country, including in capital Caracas as well as the states of Trujillo, Carabobo, Miranda, and La Guaira, causing structural damage resulting in the collapse of buildings.
