SHAH ALAM, Dec 8 — Car workshops, automotive accessory shops, car wash centres, and tyre shops under the administration of the Shah Alam City Council (MBSA) face fines of up to RM1,000 if found using public parking spaces without permission.
MBSA deputy secretary of development Aniza Osman said the premises are required to rent two parking spaces in front of their respective shop entrances.
She added that there are 431 car workshops, accessory shops, car wash centres, and tyre shops under MBSA’s jurisdiction.
“Premises that use public parking spaces for repair work or to display goods cause inconvenience to other road users. Under the MBSA 2007 Licensing, Trade, Business and Industry By-Laws, a fine of RM1,000 can be imposed,” she told The Star.
Offences include placing cones to reserve parking spaces, arranging tyres in the area, or turning it into a private driveway without paying parking fees.
Earlier, Aniza chaired a stakeholder engagement session on the Guidelines for Car Service Activities at the MBSA Convention Centre, Section 13, here.
More than 100 business owners from car service sectors, such as workshops, automotive accessory shops, car wash centres, and tyre shops, attended the session.
“Business owners were informed about the regulations because we do not want them to cause obstructions,” she said.
Aniza noted that the local authorities are aware of the difficulties faced by the public in finding parking, especially in commercial areas.
“The purpose of enforcement is not to harm businesses but to ensure smooth traffic flow and protect public interests,” she said.
Meanwhile, MBSA council member Vincent Chow urged the Enforcement Department to increase monitoring of public parking misuse in commercial areas.
He also encouraged the public to lodge complaints if there is any unauthorised use of public parking spaces.
