SHAH ALAM, Dec 4 — The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) is stepping up efforts to mitigate recurring floods in Hulu Langat, including the RM512 million first package of the Sungai Langat Flood Mitigation Plan Phase 2, which is currently at the detailed design stage.

It said that key components of the project include the construction of flood embankments, water control gates, pumping systems, flood retention ponds, bridges, as well as riverbank reinforcement and stabilisation.

“The project is currently in the detailed design stage and will be implemented conventionally once design and procurement processes are completed.

“The main focus is to lessen the risk of overflow from Sungai Langat, which has repeatedly caused flash floods in locations such as Kampung Batu 14, Sungai Serai, Pekan Kajang, and nearby settlements,” it said in a Parliamentary written reply yesterday to Hulu Langat MP Mohd Sany Hamzan’s question.

The project, through the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS), was approved under the 2025 Rolling Plan 5 of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP).

On July 7, state executive councillor for infrastructure and agriculture Dato’ Izham Hashim told the Selangor State Legislative Assembly that once the design is finalised, the project will proceed to land acquisition and utility relocation, with physical construction expected to start in 2027.

Meanwhile, Petra has carried out small-scale works under the River Conservation Project through JPS to Reduce Flood Risks, including river desilting, riverbank stabilisation, and upgrading drainage structures.

Approximately RM3.3 million was allocated to Hulu Langat in 2022 and 2024 for 27 work packages, and RM700,000 in 2025 for six additional packages, currently expected to be completed by this month.

“These measures serve as immediate interventions to reduce flood impact while waiting for the long-term mitigation project to be completed.

“The ministry continues to place top priority on addressing flood issues, particularly in locations that are prone to flooding,” it said.
