Fahmi Ngah: Selangor restructures public Internet services under digitalisation plan

SHAH ALAM, Nov 20 — The public Internet services in the state are being restructured under the Selangor Digitalisation Plan 2026-2030 to ensure more effective, sustainable access that delivers maximum impact to the people.

State executive councillor for Islamic affairs and innovation Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said that in line with this effort, the WiFi Smart Selangor (WSS) programme has been temporarily deactivated to allow for a review of the technical plan, realignment of locations, and the implementation of a new model.

The decision was made after studies found that usage levels at most locations were low, alongside the rapid development of 5G mobile networks that offered faster, cheaper Internet access.

“A comprehensive study is being conducted to assess the needs, suitable locations, and the best approach for reimplementing the programme.

“This restructuring is expected to reduce costs, enabling funds to be channelled to other digital initiatives that provide greater benefits to the people,” he said during the Selangor State Legislative Assembly session today.

Fahmi was responding to Lembah Jaya state assemblyman Syed Ahmad Abdul Rahman Alhadad's query on high-speed Internet access, 5G coverage, and free public WiFi in densely populated areas.

He added that the review is being conducted under the Selangor Digitalisation Plan 2026-2030 via the WiFi Smart Selangor 3.0 (State Digital Inclusion Initiative).

The reimplementation will be done in phases, focusing on high-impact areas like dense housing zones, schools, public libraries, and community centres.

“During this transition period, PLANMalaysia@Selangor, with support from Smartsel Sdn Bhd, is implementing the Smart Desa Selangor programme to provide Internet facilities to support community activities and village information centres,” Fahmi said.
