SHAH ALAM, Nov 19 — The Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) today announced the strategic transformation of Plaza Perangsang in Section 14 here into Grand Mercure Shah Alam hotel, making it the second Grand Mercure hotel in Malaysia.
It is set to open in the second quarter of next year.
PKNS chief executive officer Datuk Mahmud Abbas said the transformation of Plaza Perangsang is part of PKNS’ strategic mission under the SA Sentral project initiative, aimed at strengthening Shah Alam’s position as a modern, dynamic and competitive city.
He said the transformation effort was formalised through a hotel management agreement and hotel consultancy service agreement between DPMS Hospitality Sdn Bhd and Accor on October 15, signalling a new phase for the rejuvenation of Shah Alam’s city centre.
“Through this collaboration, Accor, a leading global hospitality group, has been appointed as the hotel operator, while DPMS Hospitality will act as the hotel owner, with PKNS remaining the landowner and principal developer of the entire project.
“This partnership with Accor under the Grand Mercure brand reflects PKNS’s commitment to strengthening the hospitality sector in Selangor, in line with the Visit Selangor Year campaign and the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Selangor 2026,” he said at the Sneak Preview Grand Mercure Shah Alam press conference at Galeria SA Sentral here today.
Also present were Accor Indonesia-Malaysia Development vice president Rio Kondo and SA Sentral CEO-designate Datuk Mohd Najib Ibrahim.
Mahmud said under PKNS’ asset optimisation plan, the 27-storey building, constructed in 1998 and long recognised as a landmark for administration and commerce in Shah Alam, would be repositioned from a conventional office tower into an integrated business and recreational destination.
He said the Grand Mercure Shah Alam hotel, spanning levels 18 to 26B of the building, would feature 156 premium guest rooms and comprehensive international-standard facilities including restaurants, a spa, swimming pool, fitness centre, meeting rooms, banquet hall and a dedicated children’s area.
“The internationally reputable hotel project is expected to attract both domestic and international tourists, while creating new opportunities for investors to further develop the tourism and service sectors in Selangor.
“In addition to the hotel, the transformation project will also include modern office spaces, flexible co-working areas, over 600 parking lots, as well as cafes and restaurants,” he said.
Meanwhile, Rio said the Grand Mercure Shah Alam development would further strengthen Accor’s position as a leader in Malaysia’s hospitality industry, with the Grand Mercure brand’s mission being to inspire guests to explore local beauty and celebrate local culture through premium accommodations that combined tradition, elegance and authenticity.
“We look forward to closer collaboration with our partner PKNS on this project and see this as the first step towards more hotel developments in the future,” he said.
Meanwhile, Najib said that to realise SA Sentral’s aspiration as the new heartbeat of Shah Alam, PKNS remains committed to ensuring every project delivers clear economic and social impact through sustainable development, job creation, strengthening ties with communities, and enhancing long-term state asset value.
He said the collaborative initiative forms part of PKNS’s broader and holistic transformation agenda, in line with the aspiration to strengthen strategic, sustainable and high-impact development in the state.
“I wish to express appreciation to all parties involved, especially PKNS under the SA Sentral team, strategic partners, consultants, and all stakeholders who continue to place trust and commitment in this transformation journey,” Najib said.
