KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 18 — Malaysia considers the adoption of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolution on Monday as an important step in the right direction to end the conflict in Gaza.

It also urged the council to ensure the swift and thorough implementation of the resolution to realise the rights of the Palestinians, including their statehood, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the right of return for refugees.

The Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra) said the resolution endorses the Comprehensive Plan to End the Gaza Conflict, which was announced on October 8 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt.

“The Security Council’s decision would pave the path for the establishment of a Board of Peace (BOP) and an International Stabilisation Force (ISF), to facilitate the reconstruction and economic recovery, and demilitarisation of Gaza.

“Durable peace in Palestine and in the region can only be achieved through an inclusive and comprehensive solution,” it said in a statement today.

Wisma Putra added that Malaysia will continue to support all efforts grounded in international law and principles enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations towards the realisation of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its Capital.

On Monday, the UNSC adopted a United States-drafted resolution establishing a new transitional BOP and authorising an ISF to oversee governance, reconstruction and security efforts in the Gaza Strip.

The resolution received 13 votes in favour, with China and Russia abstaining.

Anadolu Ajansi reported that the resolution stipulates the BOP and ISF’s “presences authorised by this resolution shall remain authorised until Dec 31, 2027, subject to further action by the Council, and (that) any further reauthorisation of the ISF be in full cooperation and coordination with Egypt and Israel and other Member States continuing to work with the ISF.”
