HULU LANGAT, Nov 11 — The proposal to reinstate the Primary School Assessment Test (UPSR) must be thoroughly examined and not implemented hastily, said Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari.

He said that national education policies should be implemented consistently, and any changes must take into account the views of key stakeholders, particularly parents and teachers.

“After taking several steps to abolish examinations, it is worth reviewing the matter comprehensively once again. If any changes are to be made, they should not be rushed; we must look at the issue from a broader perspective.

"The involvement of parents and teachers is crucial, as they are directly affected,” Amirudin said after officiating the Foreign Workers’ Dormitory Centre (PAPA) at the Kampung Baru Balakong industrial area today.

He also emphasised that assessments of the 3M competencies (reading, writing, and arithmetic) should not depend solely on examinations. Instead, they can be conducted through assignments, observations, and holistic classroom-based assessments.

The Menteri Besar noted that teachers’ ongoing monitoring of students’ progress can provide valuable insights into their 3M proficiency, allowing for early interventions to support those who need help.

Previously, Media Selangor reported that the National Parent-Teacher Associations Consultative Council's (PIBGN) chairman Assoc Prof Datuk Mohamad Ali Hassan had proposed reinstating the UPSR, which was abolished five years ago, to prevent possible teacher bias in student evaluations.

It was officially abolished in 2021, while the Form Three Assessment (PT3) examination was also scrapped that same year following engagement sessions with various stakeholders after both exams were postponed in 2020 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
