KLANG, Nov 10 — The Klang Royal City Council (MBDK) hopes that the upcoming 2026 Selangor Budget, to be tabled this Friday (November 14), will place special emphasis on tackling flood issues and improving infrastructure across the district.

Klang Mayor Dato' Abd Hamid Hussain said flooding remains a top concern as several areas in Klang still face critical situations whenever the rainy season arrives.

“We hope this year’s budget will increase allocations to address flood-related problems.

“Although many projects have been implemented by both the state and Federal governments, there are still several areas that require short- and long-term solutions,” he said during an event at the Wyndham Acmar Klang Hotel today.

Hamid added that Meru is among seven major flood-prone areas that should be prioritised in future planning.

“We also hope the Irrigation and Drainage Department (DID) will receive sufficient funding for the maintenance of retention ponds and drainage systems,” he said.

Hamid noted that MBDK has also undertaken several initiatives of its own, including upgrading drainage systems and building temporary retention ponds in playground areas to contain rainwater during heavy downpours.

“During dry seasons, these areas can be converted into recreational parks. This initiative is expected to help reduce flood risks in Klang,” he said.

In addition to flood management, the mayor hopes that the state budget will also focus on infrastructure development, particularly road improvements, given Klang’s role as a busy port district with extensive economic activity.

“We need a stronger infrastructure network, especially roads connecting the port area to central Klang.

“We also hope for substantial allocations to be channelled to the Public Works Department (JKR) for road repairs and upgrades, including basic amenities like street lighting to ensure user comfort and safety,” Hamid said.

The 2026 Selangor Budget is expected to focus on fiscal resilience, human capital development, and strengthening the state's position as Malaysia’s leading economic driver.

Previously, Menteri Besar Dato' Seri Amirudin Shari said the budget would serve as a transitional budget — not only concluding the First Selangor Plan (RS-1) but also laying the foundation for the upcoming Second Selangor Plan (RS-2), to be presented next year.
