SHAH ALAM, Nov 9 — The Shah Alam Sports Complex, expected to be completed by 2028, will serve as the main venue for welcoming athletes competing in the seventh edition of the Islamic Solidarity Games (ISG) in 2029.
State executive councillor for youth, sports, and entrepreneurship Mohd Najwan Halimi said Selangor has begun detailed preparations as the host of the event, including identifying the types of competitions to be contested.
“This is part of the state government’s strategy as the host. Every aspect will be reviewed, including the number of events to be organised.
“The decision will depend on Selangor, but core events will certainly be held. All details will be discussed in an organised manner,” he told Media Selangor.
Earlier, the Islamic Solidarity Sports Association (ISSA) announced that Selangor would host the world’s third-largest sporting event, after the Olympic Games and the Asian Games.
Najwan added that the selection offers Selangor a significant advantage in emerging as an international sports tourism destination.
“This is a recognition of Selangor’s capabilities, as ISSA — under the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) — has placed its trust in us,” he said.
Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari said Selangor’s selection as host reflects the confidence of foreign nations in the state’s ability to organise a tournament involving up to 57 countries.
“Alhamdulillah (God be praised), just moments ago, the ISSA announced that Selangor has been entrusted with the responsibility of hosting the seventh ISG in 2029.
“This demonstrates the confidence placed in Selangor to organise a multi-sport event involving up to 57 countries from around the world,” he said in a statement last night.
Amirudin noted that the state’s preparations and experience in hosting the 2026 Malaysia Games (Sukma) will strengthen its capacity to serve as the stage for ISG 2029 athletes.
“The state government is currently enhancing infrastructure and local facilities in preparation for the 22nd Sukma, which will also motivate our state athletes to improve their performance ahead of the ISG,” he said.
Besides Malaysia, Uzbekistan and Iran have also expressed their intention to host the global sporting event, the third largest in the world after the Olympic Games and the Asian Games.
This year, the ISG is being held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from November 7 to November 21, bringing together elite athletes from 57 countries to compete in 23 world-class events.
Malaysia has also achieved an impressive milestone, ranking tenth overall with 91 medals so far — comprising 33 gold, 23 silver, and 41 bronze — demonstrating the national contingent’s strength on the international stage.
