KUALA LUMPUR, Nov 3 — The mother of Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin has filed a notice of appeal against the Petaling Jaya Sessions Court that sentenced her to five years’ jail for neglecting her autistic six-year-old son.
Lawyer Haresh Mahadevan, representing Ismanira Abdul Manaf, 30, confirmed the notice was filed at the Shah Alam High Court.
"Yes, we filed a notice of appeal today,” he said when contacted.
She is appealing against her conviction and the entire decision by Sessions Court Judge Syahliza Warnoh on Friday (October 31), when she found that the defence had failed to create reasonable doubt.
This lead to the five-year-sentence taking effect immediately after a suspension of sentence was rejected. Ismanira's husband Zaim Ikhwan Zahari, 30, who was also charged with the same offence, was acquitted.
She is also sentenced to 120 hours of community service that has to be completed within six months after her jail sentence ends.
Both parents were charged with neglecting Zayn in a way that might result in physical harm around Block R, Idaman Apartments, Damansara Damai to the nearby stream between 12pm on December 5 and 9.55pm on December 6, 2023 after their son’s body was found near the stream a day after he was reported missing on December 5.
