SHAH ALAM, Oct 27 — More than 1,200 cases of bullying and criminal misconduct involving school students have been recorded in Selangor from January to October.
Metro Harian reported Selangor deputy police chief Mohd Zaini Abu Hassan as saying that data from the Selangor Education Department (JPNS) showed that 954 cases involved general misconduct, while another 265 involved bullying.
“From the recorded cases, 41 investigation papers have been opened, with nine related to bullying and 32 involving other forms of misconduct.
“This does not include prosecutions, as further investigations revealed that some cases lacked sufficient evidence and were classified as no further action (NFA).
“Nevertheless, we take all cases involving school students seriously, whether they concern bullying, sexual crimes, gangsterism, or disciplinary issues,” he said during a press conference after attending the morning school assembly programme with the Selangor police chief at SMK Shah Alam today.
Zaini noted that the number of reported cases is considered relatively low compared to the nearly 997,000 students enrolled in 994 schools across Selangor.
“When we say 1,200 cases out of about a million students, it sounds like a large number. But in percentage terms, it only amounts to 0.0125 per cent.
”It is just one or two cases that create the perception that the situation in Selangor’s schools is severe,” he said.
When asked whether bullying and misconduct were more common in urban or rural schools, Zaini said each had its own set of challenges.
“The number of high-risk schools is under control, and there are no schools with critically high levels of criminal cases,” he said.
