KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 26 — United States (US) President Donald Trump praised Southeast Asia today, calling the region a model of friendship and goodwill, as he reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to remain a strong partner in the years ahead.
Speaking at the 13th Asean-US Summit, he described Southeast Asia as “one of America’s most important allies”, adding that the United States’ new “golden age" would usher in greater opportunities for cooperation and growth.
Both sides would work together to create shared prosperity and explore new opportunities for their people.
"One year ago, we were in a different position, but now we are in the best position we have ever been. I really do say it is the golden age of the US.
“Together, we will create incredible prosperity for the nations and our people.
"My message to Southeast Asian nations is that the US is 100 per cent with you, and we intend to be a strong partner and friend for many generations to come," Trump said during the event, in conjunction with the 47th Asean Summit today.
He added that while diplomatic ties between the two parties date back to the early days of the republic, they continue to grow to this day, and that the US remains committed to a free, open, and thriving Indo-Pacific.
The President also praised Asean for the progress it has made over the years, as well as the diplomacy and friendship it has shown.
“I have been here for a day, but it has been an amazing experience to see some of the things you’ve accomplished. Once again, thank you to Prime Minister (Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim) and everyone in this room.
“You are spectacular leaders and incredible people. Your energy and everything you do; I say this truly, everything you touch turns to gold. And you can be very proud of it.
“Other parts of the world are not like this. You are very special people, and it’s a very, very special place,” he said in conclusion.
Earlier, in his remarks, Anwar said the vibrant economies of the US and Southeast Asia have the potential to create a "golden age" for all nations.
He noted that two-way trade between both parties reached a record US$453 billion (RM1.91 trillion) last year.
"Today, we will make the promise of our relationship ever greater. We will adopt the Asean-US Joint Vision Statement to promote a stronger, safer and more prosperous Asean and America.
"It reflects our commitment to turn cooperation into concrete outcomes with tangible benefits for Asean and the US," Anwar said.
